The main plot line is non linear with the player collecting the various items to forge a sword required to defeat Akbaa in a final showdown.
Introduction to the World of Arx
"Arx Fatalis" is set in a subterranean world where the surface has become uninhabitable due to the disappearance of the sun. The game begins with the player controlling an unnamed character who has no memory of his identity or past. The people of Arx, a city built in underground caverns, are struggling for survival, living alongside various other races such as trolls, goblins, and ratmen. The disappearance of the sun has forced these species into uneasy proximity, leading to political tensions and conflicts. As the game begins, the protagonist is imprisoned by goblins, and his first objective is to escape captivity. The world of Arx is filled with mystery, magic, and danger, and it is up to the player to unravel the secrets of this dark underground society.
The Awakening of Ancient Evil
As the protagonist explores the world of Arx, he gradually learns that he is destined for a great purpose. The game's plot revolves around the threat posed by Akbaa, an ancient demon god who seeks to be resurrected and conquer the world. The protagonist discovers that the cult of Akbaa has been operating in secret, preparing for the demon’s return by gathering followers and performing dark rituals. The various races inhabiting the underground caverns are unaware of the full extent of the danger they face, but as tensions rise and the balance of power shifts, the threat of Akbaa’s resurgence becomes more apparent. The player must navigate political intrigue, treacherous enemies, and the ever-present danger of Akbaa's followers as the game progresses.
Discovering the Hero’s Identity
As the story unfolds, the protagonist begins to uncover fragments of his lost memory. He learns that he is Am Shaegar, a hero chosen by fate to prevent Akbaa’s resurrection. This revelation adds a new layer of urgency to his mission, as he is not only battling for survival but is also the key figure in a prophecy that could determine the fate of the entire world. With this knowledge, Am Shaegar must seek out allies, recover powerful artifacts, and unlock the secrets of ancient magic to stop the impending apocalypse. The discovery of his identity is a pivotal moment in the game, marking the transition from a personal quest to a larger, more epic struggle against an overwhelming evil.
The Quest to Stop Akbaa’s Resurrection
The central plot of "Arx Fatalis" focuses on the protagonist’s quest to stop the resurrection of Akbaa. To do this, Am Shaegar must gather the ingredients needed to perform a ritual that will permanently seal Akbaa away. This involves venturing into dangerous territories, negotiating with different factions, and recovering long-lost relics of immense power. Along the way, the player faces difficult choices that can alter the course of events, from dealing with treacherous enemies to forming alliances with powerful figures. The quest is fraught with challenges, as Akbaa’s cult is constantly working in the shadows to undermine the player’s efforts and push their own agenda forward.
The Conflict Between Races
Another important aspect of the game's plot is the conflict between the various races living in the underground world of Arx. The humans, dwarves, goblins, and other species are all vying for control of precious resources and territory, and old rivalries threaten to erupt into full-scale war. The player must navigate these complex relationships, choosing when to fight and when to negotiate in order to advance the central goal of stopping Akbaa’s resurrection. The delicate balance of power between the factions adds layers of complexity to the game’s narrative, as alliances shift and betrayals are revealed. These conflicts also serve to highlight the larger theme of unity versus division, as the different races must ultimately decide whether they will stand together or fall apart in the face of the greater evil that threatens them all.
The Final Battle Against Akbaa
The climax of "Arx Fatalis" comes when Am Shaegar finally confronts the cult of Akbaa and prevents the demon god’s full resurrection. After gathering the necessary items and performing the counter-ritual, the player must face off against powerful enemies, including the high priests of Akbaa’s cult and other demonic forces. The final battle is a test of the player’s strength, strategy, and mastery of magic. As the fight progresses, the stakes become clear: if Am Shaegar fails, Akbaa will be unleashed upon the world, and the darkness will consume everything. The final battle serves as a culmination of the player’s journey, combining all the skills, knowledge, and allies gained throughout the game into one epic confrontation against evil.
Victory and Resolution
Once Akbaa is defeated, the world of Arx is spared from destruction. However, the victory comes at a cost, and the player is left to reflect on the choices made throughout the game. The conclusion of "Arx Fatalis" provides a sense of closure as the underground world begins to rebuild and recover from the devastation caused by Akbaa’s cult. The protagonist, having fulfilled his destiny as the hero of the prophecy, must decide what his future holds in a world forever changed by his actions. The resolution of the game ties up the major narrative threads, offering a satisfying conclusion to the protagonist’s journey while leaving room for reflection on the broader themes of destiny, sacrifice, and the struggle between good and evil.
